Recent migration data reveals significant shifts in population movement between Poland and Germany. According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), approximately 5,000 Germans relocated to Poland in 2025, making Poland a notable destination for German emigrants, though it still trails traditional choices like Switzerland, Austria, or Spain.

Even more striking changes are seen among Polish migrants. In 2024, for the first time in decades, more Poles returned to Poland from Germany than left Poland for Germany. Destatis figures show that about 95,000 Polish citizens left Germany, while around 84,000 arrived, resulting in a negative migration balance of roughly minus 11,000 people. This trend reverses the pattern seen after Poland joined the EU in 2004, when Germany was the primary destination for Polish labor migrants.

According to the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), about 30.7% of Poles living in Germany consider leaving, and 4.1% have concrete plans. Of those, 68% would like to return to Poland, with this desire especially strong among young people under 35.

The main driver is Poland's rapid economic growth. The European Commission forecasts GDP growth of 3.5% in 2026, while the OECD predicts 3.4% for 2025. Poland's economy is developing significantly faster than many Western European countries. Although the cost of living in major cities has risen, the overall price level in Poland remains lower than in Germany.

International companies are increasingly investing in Poland. The services sector is growing particularly fast, alongside IT, business services, logistics, and manufacturing. Recently, major US corporations, including Google, have expanded their projects in Poland. These factors together make Poland an attractive destination for both foreign specialists and returning Poles.
