Poland to expand siren network as Russian strikes near border increase
Poland plans to install more than 1,000 automatic warning sirens along its eastern border in response to Russian drone and missile strikes near the frontier. The interior minister says the number of sirens has already grown from about 30 to nearly 350 since early 2024.
Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński has announced that the country is stepping up civil defense preparations along its eastern border, planning to install more than 1,000 automatic warning sirens. He made the announcement at a press briefing in Lublin, as reported by Polish Radio.
According to Kierwiński, Russia has changed its tactics, with border crossings and other infrastructure near the frontier increasingly becoming targets of jet-powered drone and missile strikes. He noted that Poland is increasingly relying on tools designed to counter these threats.
Sharp rise in siren numbers
The minister said that at the start of 2024, the region had only about 30 remotely activated sirens in operation. Today that number stands at nearly 350, and Poland intends to expand the network further, aiming for a total of more than 1,000 automatic warning sirens.
Poland had previously announced tighter security at border crossing points with Ukraine due to threats from Russia. Residents in several districts in eastern Poland are also being warned about air raid siren tests. It was also reported recently that a border stretch of more than 100 kilometers with Ukraine will be equipped with a system that will supplement physical barriers, including monitoring equipment and motion detectors.
