Poland signs record $2 billion deal for Piorun air defense systems

Poland has signed a framework agreement worth approximately $2 billion for the procurement of Piorun portable air defense systems and their missiles. The deal is described as the largest order ever placed for this type of weapon since it entered use by Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion.
Under the terms of the agreement, several thousand launchers and missiles are to be supplied. More than 80 percent of the total order is designated for Poland's own armed forces, while the remaining share is expected to go to other recipients or allies.
Piorun is a Polish-made man-portable air defense system designed to counter low-altitude aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters and drones. It has become one of the most recognizable Western-supplied weapons used by Ukrainian forces since the start of the full-scale war.
The new contract reflects Poland's ongoing effort to strengthen its own military capacity while retaining the ability to support allies with modern air defense equipment, amid a security environment that remains tense due to Russia's continued aggression against Ukraine.
