Poland steps up airspace monitoring and scrambles fighter jets
As Russia carries out a large-scale attack on Ukraine, Poland scrambled military fighter jets on 8 October and tightened airspace surveillance. Residents of eastern regions have been warned of a possible threat.

On Thursday, 8 October, Poland strengthened monitoring of its airspace and again scrambled military fighter jets in response to Russia's large-scale attack on Ukraine, Ukrainian outlet TSN reports.
Warning to residents
Poland's Security Centre sent a morning alert to residents of the Lublin and Subcarpathian voivodeships. It said that military aviation was operating in Polish airspace in connection with Russia's attack on Ukraine. People were urged to remain vigilant and follow official announcements.
Alerts were also issued in several cities, including Lublin, Chełm, Zamość, Rzeszów and Przemyśl.
A familiar response
In such situations Poland increases airspace surveillance and, when necessary, sends fighters into the air to respond to possible threats to its territory. Similar steps have been taken before, when Russian missile and drone strikes hit western Ukraine near the Polish border.
The authorities explain these measures by the need to ensure the security of national airspace and to be ready for possible changes in the regional situation.
Poland is also continuing to strengthen its air defence, paying particular attention to eastern areas closest to Ukraine.
