A dramatic incident in the Polish city of Piekary Śląskie left a local resident seriously injured after he tried to stop a suspected drunk driver from continuing to drive. The incident took place on Bednorza Street after a Renault vehicle had crashed into two cars parked along the road.
According to police, a bystander approached the car after witnessing the crash and tried to pull the keys from the ignition to prevent the driver from continuing. At that moment, the 37-year-old driver suddenly accelerated, dragging the man along the road surface for several meters.
Victim hospitalized
The injured bystander, who suffered various injuries, was taken to a hospital. Investigators are now determining whether the driver's actions constitute a deliberate threat to life and health. Footage of the incident was shared on social media by a deputy mayor of the city.
The driver initially managed to flee the scene, but police later located and detained him in Katowice. Blood samples were taken from the 37-year-old to determine whether alcohol or other intoxicating substances were present in his system, and a decision on his arrest is currently pending.
Police publicly thanked the bystander for his civic courage, while also reminding the public that attempts to personally detain dangerous offenders must not endanger one's own life and health. In dangerous situations, authorities urge people to immediately call the emergency number 112.
