A mushroom picker named Ilona, walking in a forest in southern Poland this autumn, has found an unusually large specimen of the rudmiese, a mushroom that is also popular among foragers in Latvia. According to the Latvian website Receptes.lv, which published photos of the find, it was so big that it was hard to miss.
Size and weight
When the mushroom was weighed, it came to 303 grams. A photograph showing it next to a measuring tape indicates that the cap is roughly 18 centimetres wide.
The source notes that this mushroom clearly stands out from typical members of the same species, which are usually considerably smaller.
Why it is being reported
Autumn walks in the forest can surprise even experienced pickers, and this case is one example. The source does not say anything further about the find, such as whether the mushroom was eaten.
The rudmiese is among the mushrooms commonly gathered and cooked in Latvia, so news of such a large specimen may interest local mushroom enthusiasts. Judging by its weight and cap width, the mushroom Ilona found is described as a true giant compared with ordinary examples of the species.
