Poland's Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that on August 31 Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. The incident occurred around 30 kilometers north of the city of Łeba, before noon.

Writing on X, the minister said Russia had once again tested Poland's deterrence and air defence systems. He noted that no violation of Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea occurred this time.

Previous incidents

This is not the first such incident in recent weeks. On August 3, Polish fighters intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, and a similar incident was recorded the following day, August 4.

In July, Poland had to scramble its air force in response to two Russian Su-30SM2 fighter jets that took off from the Kaliningrad region. These repeated episodes point to increased activity by Russian military aviation in the Baltic Sea region, close to NATO member states' airspace.
