A tourist named Waldek has posted a photo of a receipt from breakfast at a mountain hostel in the Tatra Mountains in Poland. The receipt is dated 2 October, and it drew attention mainly because of the price of boiled eggs. The man says he has been visiting the Tatras for many years.

What was on the receipt

The total for breakfast was 124 zloty, or roughly 29 euros. The bill included these items:

  • four boiled eggs – 32 zloty (about 7.50 euros);
  • two breakfast sets – 64 zloty (about 15 euros);
  • two teas with lemon – 24 zloty (about 5.60 euros);
  • two portions of bread – 4 zloty (about 0.94 euros).

That works out at almost two euros per egg. Four eggs cost exactly as much as one full breakfast set, which was the biggest surprise for Waldek.

The tourist's explanation

Waldek writes that he has grown used to many things in the Tatras, and others he no longer notices. He admits he had always said that hardly anything could surprise him, but that to err is human.

He stresses that the aim of his post is not to complain about high prices or to put others off visiting the Tatras. In his words, the receipt is not meant to scare anyone. He calls it a curiosity showing what price a mountain hostel can set for a plain chicken egg. The author also mentions a saying: if you have no money, do not go to the mountains.
