Politician: Pitbull concert cancellation to cost organizers hundreds of thousands of euros

Latvian politician Filips Rajevskis, commenting on the fallout from the cancellation of American rapper Pitbull's concert, said the organizers face substantial financial losses — running into several hundred thousand euros — meaning it will take them a long time to recover. Still, he does not believe the incident will have lasting consequences for Latvia's concert organizing industry as a whole.

Speaking on the TV24 programme "Preses klubs," journalist Elizabete Puče noted that the cancellation sparked a wide response on social media, including jokes and outrage, some of which has even been used for marketing purposes.

Conductor Ints Teterovskis stressed that such a serious reason for cancelling a concert requires a thorough explanation from the organizers, since the situation risks damaging Latvia's reputation — particularly given that foreign visitors had incurred extra costs for flights and hotel bookings. He compared the situation to the successful Song Festival events at the Mežaparks Great Bandstand, which demonstrate Latvia's ability to host top-level events.

Reasons behind the cancellation

As previously reported, the concert was cancelled due to concerns about the safety of the stage construction. This was confirmed by Ģirts Majors, a representative of the event organizers, in an interview with Latvian Television's "Rīta panorāma," who explained that the issue only became known a few hours before the cancellation was announced. That is why the announcement was brief — there wasn't time to detail all the circumstances immediately. It remains unclear whether the problem lay with the stage structure itself or with its incorrect assembly, and expert assessments are planned to determine this.

Majors said that over the past day the artist's equipment was safely dismantled so the next Pitbull concert, in Lithuania, could proceed without disruption. He emphasized that the decision to cancel was professional and responsible, made in line with strict international safety regulations, and should not harm the organizers' reputation or their ability to work with world-class artists in the future. At the same time, he acknowledged the decision was costly and very difficult.
