Political analysts: Estonian presidential election may be unpredictable
With less than a month until candidate nominations, the strongest contender – Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise – has not yet confirmed her candidacy, creating uncertainty among parties and experts.
Estonia’s presidential election is approaching, with less than a month left for candidate nominations. The strongest potential candidate, Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise, enjoys verbal support from several parliamentary parties but has not yet announced whether she will run. This has led political analysts to describe the race as unpredictable.
To be officially nominated, a candidate needs 21 signatures from Riigikogu members. Currently, three factions – the Reform Party, Eesti 200, and the Social Democratic Party – have stated they would back Madise if she decides to stand. The Centre Party also expressed cautious sympathy for her candidacy early in the summer.
The Reform Party notes that Madise’s public support is very high and hopes this translates into parliamentary backing. However, Madise’s failure to give a definitive “yes” prevents some parties from openly endorsing her.
Centre Party leader Mihhail Kõlvart criticised the tendency of parties to pre-arrange the outcome, arguing that the president should be elected, not appointed behind closed doors. He called for the Centre Party and Isamaa to clarify their positions.
Political communication expert Annika Arras highlighted that the secret ballot in parliament always introduces uncertainty – even if a party publicly supports a candidate, individual MPs may vote differently. Thus, the outcome remains unclear until the votes are counted.
