A case that has drawn public attention in recent days involves former Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks, who was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident has reignited debate over how society should judge alcohol-related offenses committed by public officials.
Shortly before this case, a tragic incident occurred near Liepāja, where a police officer under the influence of alcohol beat a teacher, who later died from the injuries. Such incidents recur periodically in Latvia, raising concerns about the effects of alcohol on people's ability to control their behavior — particularly when those involved hold positions tied to heightened responsibility and public trust.

Asked whether offenses committed by officials while intoxicated should be judged more strictly than those committed by ordinary citizens, political scientist Filips Rajevskis called the question timely and well-founded. He referenced the motto inscribed on the wall of the Cabinet of Ministers building — "One law, one justice for all" — stressing that it should apply equally to everyone, whether a civilian, a member of the military, a public official, or an unemployed person.
With this reference, Rajevskis indicated that all members of society, including high-ranking officials and politicians, should be equal before the law rather than subject to different standards depending on their position.
