Polish Black Metal Act Batushka to Bring Eastern Orthodox-Inspired Show to Tallinn

Polish black metal band Batushka is set to perform in Tallinn on Saturday, October 3, at the Paavli Culture Factory. The concert marks the group's return to Estonia, following a sold-out performance at Klubi Tapper in the capital in 2022.

Hailing from Białystok in northeastern Poland, Batushka draws its musical and lyrical inspiration from the Eastern Orthodox Church, despite Poland's predominantly Catholic tradition. The band's name translates to 'Father' in reference to the Orthodox clergy. On stage, members don religious habits and Orthodox schemas, and their personal identities are largely kept out of the public eye. Lyrics are delivered exclusively in Old Church Slavonic, and the music is characterized by the use of eight-string guitars, a departure from the conventional six-string setup.

Founded by Krzysztof Drabikowski, the band gained international attention with its 2015 debut album, 'Litourgiya.' Following an internal split in 2018, two separate acts have been performing under the Batushka name, with Drabikowski continuing to lead one of them in touring and recording.

The band's religious imagery has occasionally sparked controversy, drawing accusations of blasphemy from some quarters. In 2023, a scheduled performance in Serbia was called off following pressure from socially conservative groups.

The upcoming Tallinn concert is scheduled to take place at the Paavli Culture Factory.
