Portugal cruise to 5-0 win over Uzbekistan as Ronaldo sets World Cup record
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to help Portugal defeat Uzbekistan 5-0, becoming the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments.

Cristiano Ronaldo added another milestone to his legendary career on Tuesday, scoring two goals to lead Portugal to a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the 2026 World Cup. The 41-year-old forward became the first player ever to score in six different World Cup editions, netting in the 6th and 39th minutes. His first goal came from a João Cancelo cross, finished with his right foot, and he celebrated with his trademark "SIUUU" alongside teammates. The second was a right-footed strike from a Bruno Fernandes pass just inside the near post.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez kept faith in Ronaldo despite a lackluster opening draw with DR Congo, and the decision paid off. Nuno Mendes had made it 2-0 in the 17th minute from a free kick. An own goal in the 60th minute extended the lead to 4-0, and substitute Rafael Leão scored the fifth in the 87th minute, posing for the camera after his goal.
Uzbekistan thought they had pulled one back through Azizjon Ganiev in the 30th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for a foul by Abbosbek Fayzullaev on Cancelo. Martínez made two changes to his lineup, benching Bernardo Silva for João Félix and starting Rúben Dias, who had missed the opener due to injury, ahead of Tomás Araújo.
Ronaldo nearly had a hat-trick in stoppage time but his shot went just wide. Portugal now sit top of Group K with four points, while Colombia have three points. Uzbekistan's next match is against Congo on Saturday in Atlanta, while Portugal face Colombia the same night in Miami.
