Portugal manager leaves door open for Ronaldo's return

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus says Cristiano Ronaldo can return to the national team whenever he wishes, after the captain left the squad's camp over being left out of the starting line-up. Portugal secured a Nations League quarter-final spot in the meantime.

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus says the door remains open for captain Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the national team, stressing the decision ultimately rests with the 41-year-old forward himself.

Tension arose after Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr, was left on the bench unused against Norway and then learned he would not start against Denmark either. Following that news, he departed the national team's camp. On social media, he said he would eventually explain to the Portuguese public his reasons for leaving, while insisting he has always been fully committed to the national side.

Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at club level with Al-Nassr, said the choice to return belongs to the player, adding that the two could discuss matters before the next squad call-up.

Portugal beat Norway 2-1 on Sunday, a result that secured the defending Nations League champions a place in the competition's last eight. Ronaldo had started the opening group game, a 1-0 win over Wales, but was later relegated to a substitute role. In his absence, AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos has scored in all three matches he has started.

Teammates voiced support for Ronaldo amid the episode. Goalscorer Joao Cancelo described him as the team's captain and the best player in Portugal's history, while Nuno Mendes said the squad would welcome him back with open arms should he choose to return.

Portugal's next fixtures in Group A4 come on 14 November against Denmark, followed by an away match in Wales three days later. Ronaldo holds the all-time records for both international goals and appearances, having scored 146 goals in 234 matches for Portugal, and has previously helped the side win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles.
