At least 41 people have died and about 60 are missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Guyana, according to Prime Minister Mark Phillips.

A ferry named "MV Barima" has sunk off the coast of Guyana, resulting in a tragedy. Prime Minister Mark Phillips announced that at least 41 people have died, and about 60 are still considered missing. The vessel was carrying approximately 180 people, of whom 77 have been rescued. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Route and Possible Cause
The ferry was traveling from the capital Georgetown to Port Kaituma in the Essequibo region, near the border with Venezuela. The cause of the sinking is not yet known. However, authorities reported that the captain, who survived the incident, tested positive for marijuana.
Investigation Promised
President Irfaan Ali assured the public in a televised address that a full, thorough, and independent investigation into the tragedy will be conducted. Local media reported that the ferry sent a distress signal about eight hours into its planned 24-hour journey.
