Man in Preiļi Region Brutally Kills Dog; Case Sent to Prosecutor
A man born in 1964 in Preiļi region beat and kicked a dog to death, leaving the body in an abandoned house. Police have completed the investigation and forwarded the case to the prosecutor.

Officers from the North Latgale Station of the State Police Latgale Regional Administration, upon arriving at the scene, discovered a pool of blood in a stairwell. Investigation revealed that a man born in 1964 had cruelly treated a dog – striking it on the head with an object and kicking its body multiple times, resulting in the animal's death. After the brutal act, the man carried the dog's carcass to an abandoned house and left it there. At the time of the incident, the man was heavily intoxicated.
A criminal case was initiated under Section 230, Part 2 of the Criminal Law, which penalizes cruelty to animals causing death or mutilation. The penalty for this offense includes imprisonment for up to five years, short-term imprisonment, or probation supervision, along with a ban on keeping animals for up to five years.
On July 6, 2026, police investigators completed the investigation and sent the case to the prosecutor's office for the initiation of criminal prosecution.
