Teacher Killed in Priekule Dedicated His Life to Young People

The victim of the tragedy in Priekule is Normunds Vamzis, a pedagogue at the Liepāja Music, Art and Design Secondary School. He died following a conflict that broke out early Sunday after the city's festival ball. Medics attempted to provide aid, but he succumbed to his injuries in an ambulance.

Educational Work

Vamzis frequently visited Priekule because his mother lived there, but his greatest contribution was in pedagogy and training young designers. He worked at the Liepāja school for about 20 years and headed the clothing design program. This year, he received a certificate of honor for outstanding teaching.

Colleague Ieva Rubeze stated that Vamzis did not have a traditional family; his family and home were the school. He devoted his life to fostering the growth of many young people. Shortly before the tragedy, he shared plans for upcoming fashion shows and intended to pursue doctoral studies at the Latvian Academy of Culture. He would have turned 60 next year.

Investigation Underway

Several conflicting versions of the conflict have emerged among Priekule residents. Locals said the detained police officer may have been involved in earlier conflicts that evening and behaved aggressively. There are allegations that the teacher intervened to defend a woman, while other witnesses reported multiple fights during the event. None of these versions have been officially confirmed; police are clarifying the exact circumstances.

A junior inspector of the State Police has been detained on suspicion of the fatal attack. He was off-duty and under the influence of alcohol at the event. The Kurzeme District Court ordered his detention. The Internal Security Bureau is investigating the case as intentional infliction of severe bodily harm resulting in death due to negligence.
