Prince Harry forced to cut short AI speech after teleprompter failure
At the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York on Wednesday, a teleprompter malfunction forced the Duke of Sussex to briefly leave the stage midway through a speech warning about AI risks to children.
Prince Harry faced an awkward moment at the "Clinton Global Initiative 2026" annual meeting in New York, where he had come to warn about the potential impact of artificial intelligence and social media on children. About seven minutes into his address, the teleprompter stopped working, and the Duke of Sussex was unable to continue.
According to British media reports, Harry managed to deliver only about half of his planned remarks. The problem was traced specifically to the teleprompter system, which was later confirmed by Harry's representative. When the text stopped appearing, the prince paused, walked around the stage briefly, said "and that's it," put down the microphone and left.

About 40 minutes later, Harry returned and turned the incident into a joke, saying that "AI had gotten into his speech." The irony was not lost on foreign media either — the prince was forced to cut short a speech at the exact moment he was warning about technology's growing hold on people's lives.
Harry's underlying message, however, was serious. He focused on how AI chat tools can affect children's emotional relationships with technology, calling AI the "ultimate sycophant" and warning that technological development is outpacing researchers' ability to fully assess its consequences. He distinguished social media's approach of capturing and holding attention from what he sees as a newer problem posed by AI tools, which can become conversational partners that people — especially children — trust with personal information and turn to for emotional support.
The prince urged tech companies and government institutions not to wait years to determine the consequences, calling for greater transparency, accountability, user choice and clear safety standards. Speaking also as a father of two, he referenced conversations with parents whose children had been harmed by online environments. Harry and Meghan Markle established the Parents' Network in 2024 to support such families.
After the teleprompter was restored, the prince completed his speech without further incident.
