Private Claude Chats Exposed in Google and Bing Search Results

Anthropic's Claude chatbot had private chats, including erotic roleplay, indexed by search engines due to missing noindex tags, despite robots.txt directives.

Private chats appear in search engines

Over the weekend, users discovered that some Anthropic Claude chats shared publicly were easily found via Google and Bing. The issue was first flagged on Reddit.

The exposed chats included discussions about political party affiliations, legal ethics questions from Kansas attorneys, and erotic roleplay. Claude allows users to share chats by creating a public URL, but many of these URLs were indexed by major search engines.

Robots.txt not enough

Anthropic had instructions in its robots.txt file telling web crawlers not to index shared chats. However, both Google and Bing note in their documentation that robots.txt is insufficient—pages also need a noindex HTML tag or an x-robots-tag in the HTTP header.

WIRED examined a sample of the exposed Claude chat pages and found they lacked the noindex tag. Bing still shows about 612 results for the query "site:claude.ai/share" at the time of writing. Google has removed these results.

Responsibility

Google spokesperson Ned Adriance said indexing of shared Claude chats is Anthropic's responsibility. "Neither Google nor any other search engine controls what pages are made public on the web. We give site owners clear controls to decide whether pages can be crawled or indexed, and we always respect those directives."

Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment. The company faced a similar issue last September, when Forbes reported that robots.txt does not guarantee protection against indexing.

What users can do

To protect privacy, Claude users should go to Settings > Privacy > Shared chats to manage access. The pages reviewed by WIRED still lack the noindex tag, meaning they could reappear in search results.
