July is a crucial month for many young people in Latvia as university admissions begin and decisions about future career paths must be made. However, Professor Inga Šīna points out that modern youth's career choices differ significantly from those of their parents' generation – influenced not only by salary and job opportunities but also by social media, a desire for a flexible lifestyle, self-realization, and even artificial intelligence.
The professor discusses which study programs are currently becoming more popular and why young people should no longer fear making mistakes with their initial choice. She also explains the boundary between valuable parental advice and excessive influence. Social media often creates a misleading impression of professions, Šīna notes, adding that certain skills will remain valuable in the labor market even after ten or twenty years.
