PSG retain UEFA Super Cup with win over Aston Villa; Xavi named Netherlands coach
Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg to defend their UEFA Super Cup title, while European swimming and athletics championships delivered notable results.
Reigning Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, defeating Premier League side Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué secured the win for Luis Enrique's side, giving the French club a successful start to the new season by holding on to the trophy they won a year earlier.
Xavi takes charge of the Netherlands
Elsewhere in European football, former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernández was appointed head coach of the Dutch national team. The 46-year-old had been without a coaching role since his spell at Barcelona ended in 2024.
Records in the pool
On day three of the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, 19-year-old Italian swimmer Sara Curtis set a new world record in the 50m backstroke semi-finals. Later in the evening, Romania's David Popovici won his third consecutive European title in the 100m freestyle, while Sweden's Sarah Sjöström claimed her 18th continental gold medal, equalling the all-time record.
Silver for France on the track
At the European Athletics Championships, Team France added two silver medals on Wednesday. Muhammad Abdallah Kounta finished runner-up in the 400m final, before Just Kwaou-Mathey also took second place in the 110m hurdles.
