PSG beat Marseille away as crisis deepens for rivals in relegation zone

Round five of the French football championship produced its headline clash as Paris Saint-Germain beat Olympique de Marseille 2:1 away from home.

Second-half goals decide the match

After a goalless first half, PSG broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when substitute Ferran Torres headed in a cross from Desire Doue, his seventh goal for the club overall. Torres had only entered the match in the 59th minute. Six minutes later the hosts equalized as Angel Gomes beat Parisian defender Pacho inside the penalty area. However, PSG regained the lead just two minutes later when center-back Marquinhos scored on a rebound. Late in the match, Marseille were reduced to ten men after Timothy Weah picked up a second yellow card.

Marseille's slide continues

Marseille opened the season with a commanding win over Strasbourg but have since lost five straight matches across all competitions, including Europa League play, conceding 12 goals in the process. The club now sits 17th in the table, inside the relegation zone. PSG, by contrast, had gone unbeaten but winless through its first four domestic matches before now stringing together two consecutive victories.

Monaco takes sole control of the top spot

Thanks to Lille's defeat at Nice, AS Monaco became the sole league leader after beating Lens 2:1 at home, with the winner coming via an own goal from longtime Lens defender Jonathan Gradit. Nice climbed to 14th place, while Lens dropped to 15th. The round's most emphatic result belonged to Olympique Lyonnais, who thrashed Rennes 4:0 at home, with Ghanaian forward Ernest Nuamah scoring twice.
