Citing psychotherapist Eloise Skinner, the outlet “Blikk” reports that couples with a small age gap — roughly zero to three years — generally have greater chances of building long-term, stable relationships.
Why a small age gap helps
Skinner explains that partners of similar age are often at comparable life stages, which makes joint decisions about careers, daily responsibilities, leisure and starting a family easier. Similar physical capabilities and energy levels also tend to make planning shared activities and travel simpler. Being at a similar life stage further helps couples agree on financial matters such as expenses and savings.
Bigger gaps can bring challenges
The expert stresses that a larger age difference does not by itself doom a relationship, but over time it may reduce relationship satisfaction as partners need to adapt more to changing life circumstances. Differing life experience — for instance, when one partner is already established in their career while the other is just starting out — can lead to diverging priorities. Differences in wishes about having children, career goals or where to live can also cause friction.
The importance of balance
Skinner also points to the sense of equality within a relationship. A larger age gap sometimes coincides with differences in income or social status, which can affect relationship dynamics, though such imbalances can also occur between people of the same age. In her view, what matters most is not the number itself, but whether partners can agree on key life issues, respect each other's needs, and share a similar vision for their future together.
