New, previously unseen video footage has surfaced on social media showing the destruction caused by deadly floods in Nepal, where the death toll has reached 903 and nearly 4,250 people remain missing.
New video footage has been circulating on social media showing the aftermath of the floods that struck the Bhotekoshi river area in Nepal on 26 August. The disaster caused extensive destruction to inhabited areas and infrastructure, and its full impact is still being assessed.
Death toll and missing persons continue to rise
According to the latest data from Nepali authorities, the death toll from the disaster has reached 903. A further 4,247 people are still considered missing, including 592 foreign nationals. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in several of the hardest-hit regions.
Difficult situation in Chitwan district
One of the most challenging situations has developed in Chitwan district, where strong river currents swept human remains downstream from flood-affected areas. In Chitwan alone, 272 bodies have been recovered so far.
The scale of the disaster has also created serious difficulties in identifying the dead. Authorities in Chitwan have begun temporary burials of unidentified remains, first collecting DNA samples and other information that may help determine identities in the future.
Rescue efforts continue
Thousands of people are still awaiting news about their loved ones as rescue operations continue under difficult conditions. The newly released footage offers a glimpse of the extent of destruction inflicted on populated areas and infrastructure in the affected regions.
