Western Australia police have charged a teenage boy with murder and attempted murder following a violent incident at a family home in Bentley, in Perth's south-east, on Tuesday morning.

Officers arriving at the scene discovered the body of a 35-year-old woman, the mother of the suspect. The boy's 12-year-old sister was also stabbed but managed to escape the house and reach a nearby highway, where she sought help from bystanders. They provided life-saving first aid before paramedics took her to Perth Children's Hospital, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

The 16-year-old was formally charged on Wednesday with one count of murder and one count of attempting to unlawfully kill. Acting Inspector Jessica Securo said the incident has shocked the community. "This incident will have a significant impact on the family, friends and loved ones of all those involved," she said. "Our thoughts are with them all, particularly the 12-year-old girl."

The teenager was scheduled to appear before the Perth Children's Court on Wednesday.
