Vacuum Cleaner Losing Suction? Three Things to Check Before Buying a New One

If a household vacuum cleaner picks up less dirt than before, the cause is often dirty filters, a full container or a blockage. Romanian outlet EVZ.ro advises checking these parts before buying a replacement.

A household vacuum cleaner can suddenly lose suction power, but buying a new one is not always necessary. The Romanian news outlet EVZ.ro says the problem can often be fixed at home by checking three components: the filters, the dust container or bag, and the hose and brush.

Filters

Filters trap dust and dirt, but over time they clog. This restricts airflow and reduces the machine's suction power. Depending on the model, a filter can be washed, while in other cases it must be replaced. The manufacturer's instructions should be read before cleaning. A washable filter must be completely dry before it is put back, because a damp filter can interfere with the device's operation.

Container or bag

An almost full dust bag or an overfilled container can also noticeably reduce efficiency. When the dust has too little room and airflow is obstructed, the machine collects dirt less effectively. The vacuum cleaner should be switched off and unplugged, then the container emptied or the bag replaced. Afterwards, make sure all parts are fitted correctly.

Hose and brush

Hair, threads, scraps of paper and other debris can get stuck in the hose, tube or nozzle. The rotating brush can become clogged with hair and fabric fibres, so it cleans carpets less well. Before checking, unplug the device, inspect the hose and attachments, and clean the brush according to the manufacturer's instructions. Sharp objects should not be used to clear blockages, as they can damage the appliance.

When to call a technician

If the filters are clean, the container is empty and there are no blockages, yet suction remains weak, a technical fault may be the cause. Unusual noises, a burning smell or the device repeatedly switching itself off can also point to damage. In that case it is safer to contact a specialist rather than try to take the vacuum cleaner apart yourself.

The outlet notes that spending a few minutes on these three checks may restore the device's performance and avoid the cost of new equipment.
