Wife of Putin's Press Secretary Demands €2 Million Compensation for EU Sanctions
Olympic figure skating champion Tatiana Navka, wife of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, has filed a lawsuit in the EU court seeking to lift sanctions and demand over €2 million in compensation.
Tatiana Navka, an Olympic champion in figure skating and the wife of Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov, has taken legal action against the European Union. She has appealed to the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg, challenging the sanctions imposed on her by the European Council in connection with Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Navka is demanding not only the annulment of the sanctions but also compensation exceeding two million euros.
The sanctions, which include asset freezes and travel bans, were introduced in 2022 following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Navka, known for her close ties to the Russian authorities, is among numerous individuals listed in EU sanctions. She argues that the restrictions are unjustified and have caused significant damage to her reputation and financial interests.
In her lawsuit, Navka requests the court to declare the sanctions invalid from the moment they were applied. She also seeks compensation for losses incurred due to the restrictions, including her inability to travel freely and conduct transactions. The claimed amount surpasses two million euros.
This case is part of a broader trend where sanctioned individuals attempt to challenge restrictions in EU courts. However, so far, the court has mostly upheld the decisions of the EU Council. Navka's claim is yet to be heard, with a ruling expected in the coming months.
