Russian President Vladimir Putin faced several awkward moments while speaking at an event marking Teachers' Day, sparking widespread commentary online.

Misquoted poem

Putin attempted to recite a well-known four-line verse by Russian poet Fyodor Tyutchev about Russia being impossible to grasp with reason alone. However, he failed to reproduce the original text accurately, rephrasing one line differently from how it actually reads. He also claimed that Russian schoolchildren absorb this poem from early childhood — a remark that drew ridicule on social media.

Confused remarks on education

A third awkward moment came when Putin spoke about the need to nurture an intellectual elite. His statement came out tangled and effectively conveyed the opposite of what he appeared to intend — it could be read as suggesting the country should avoid cultivating a thinking intellectual elite. Putin stressed that teachers and educators play a major role in this matter.

Some commentators online interpreted the muddled phrasing as an unintentional revelation of Russia's real attitude toward educated youth. The discussion also touched on the departure of scientists from Russia, with claims that at least 60,000 researchers have left the country over the past six years.
