Bryson DeChambeau, 32, the two-time US Open champion, was penalized on Friday for trampling long grass near his ball on the fifth hole. Although he initially appeared to move into contention, the penalty left him one shot off the lead. Later on Friday, DeChambeau said the decision would "fire" him up for the weekend, and he is now three shots behind Australian overnight leader Lucas Herbert. R&A chief executive Martin Darbon declined to comment on whether DeChambeau threatened to withdraw on Friday night, but acknowledged an "emotional moment" and empathized with the player. Darbon emphasized that the ruling was clear and fair, and focused on applying the rules.
