Rabbit launches standalone AI agent that no longer requires the R1 device
Rabbit, the company behind the underwhelming R1 device, has rolled out a new cloud-based AI operating system called OS3 that works without its hardware. The startup also confirmed it has halted R1 production while developing a new device.
Rabbit, the startup known for its widely criticized R1 device, has begun offering a standalone AI agent system that no longer requires owning its hardware to use. The move was first reported by Wired.
The new system, called OS3 or an "agentic operating system," runs in the cloud but operates locally across Windows, Mac, and Linux devices. According to Rabbit, users can link up to five devices to a single account and choose their preferred AI models.
Automatic resource selection
OS3 automatically determines which devices, files, apps, and AI models are needed to complete a given task. Users can access the system through a dedicated desktop website, through paired messaging apps such as Telegram or iMessage, or through Rabbit's own R1 device if they already own one.
R1 production halted
Rabbit founder Jesse Lyu told Wired that the company has stopped manufacturing the R1 device. However, this does not mean Rabbit is abandoning hardware entirely — it is now working on a new project described as a "vibe-coding" device, referred to as a "cyberdeck," which will run OS3 when released. Wired reports the device is expected to launch within months.
Data privacy
Rabbit states that OS3 will not store, copy, use, or sell users' data. However, the company notes that chats and the "memories" derived from them will still be kept on its servers. Other AI providers integrated into OS3 will handle user data according to their own privacy policies.
