Rainers Balodis returns home as disc golf world runner-up

On Tuesday, September 1, disc golfer Rainers Balodis returned to Riga from the United States after finishing runner-up at the world championship over the weekend. The 21-year-old athlete told the LETA news agency that during the long journey home he realized his joy outweighs his disappointment.

Before the tournament, Balodis was seeded 95th among more than 200 competitors and had not set himself a specific target, hoping only to finish in the top 20. The final result far exceeded expectations, and his following on social media has grown as a result.

Since this was Balodis' first time competing in the United States, he also faced difficulties adjusting to the time zone, waking up around four in the morning during the first days out of habit from Latvian time. Adaptation took about three days, with the team having arrived roughly five days before the competition began.

The decisive penalty

After four rounds, Balodis led the field by a comfortable margin. In the final round, he was still ahead after 16 holes, but on hole 17 officials called a stance violation against him following a complaint from American player Aaron Gossage. The resulting penalty stroke allowed Gossage's teammate, Silas Schultz, to draw level. After 18 holes the two were tied, and Schultz won the title in a playoff, with Balodis finishing one stroke behind.

Balodis said he accepts the outcome calmly, noting that penalties are not given without reason and that he made a mistake himself. He added that he holds no grudge against Gossage for raising the issue with officials, even though the episode has divided opinion among disc golf fans.

The silver medal could open doors to other high-level events for Balodis, including a possible appearance in October at the USDGC, the sport's second-largest championship. Next week he will compete in the world team championship in Lithuania.
