Minimalist writing gadget BYOK plans to add custom scripts
The maker of BYOK, a distraction-free writing device, is developing an optional scripting system to let users extend its functionality. The feature is still in early development, and the company is seeking user feedback.
BYOK is a minimalist, single-purpose device built primarily for distraction-free text drafting. While most users are content with its bare-bones functionality, some want to use it for more — such as note-taking, writing screenplays, or organizing lengthy novels.
BYOK founder Nick Sjolinder has been working on how to satisfy both casual users who prefer simplicity and more demanding users who want additional capabilities, without overloading the device itself or its companion Studio app with features most people would never use. The solution the company has settled on is optional scripts that will let users expand what BYOK can do.
Possible uses
Examples of scripts users could eventually create include a screenplay-writing assistant, a character-note tool, and a writing analyzer. Such tools could, for instance, let a user highlight a passage of text and turn it into a separate note, or flag instances of passive voice in their writing.
The scripting feature is still early in development and has not yet been publicly released, but BYOK is already collecting feedback from users about the planned system.
