India's Ram Temple hit by corruption scandal; millions in donations allegedly embezzled
The Ram Temple in Ayodhya, India, is embroiled in a corruption scandal with allegations that its trust managers embezzled millions of dollars in donations. Investigations, arrests, and resignations follow, potentially affecting upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Corruption Scandal at Ram Temple
The Ram Temple in Ayodhya, inaugurated two and a half years ago and one of India's holiest Hindu sites, is at the center of a corruption scandal. Allegations have emerged that the trust managing the temple, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, misappropriated donations worth potentially millions of dollars from devotees. The trust is officially independent but its members have political ties, including to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The accusations were first made public this month by Mahipal Singh, a former supervisor of the trust's accounting team. After public outcry, Akhilesh Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh chief minister from the opposition Samajwadi Party, took up the issue. The state government, led by the BJP, formed a three-member investigation team. While the report has not been made public, police have registered a criminal case and arrested at least eight people, including those involved in counting cash and valuables at the temple.
Fallout and Political Implications
The scandal has angered many devotees, including BJP supporters. Champat Rai, the trust's long-time general secretary, and other trustees have resigned. However, critics accuse the government of a cover-up, arresting only junior staff while protecting higher-ups. Karpatri Maharaj, a prominent Hindu seer, called the arrests a scapegoating tactic.
Political analyst Rasheed Kidwai said the scandal could damage the BJP ahead of Uttar Pradesh state elections due early next year. The party has long used the Ram Temple campaign as a key political plank. "Playing with religious emotions can backfire," Kidwai warned, noting that the state's chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, is a Hindu monk-turned-politician.
This is not the first controversy for the trust: in 2021, it was accused of buying land at inflated prices using donations. BJP spokespersons declined to comment on the latest allegations.
