The New York Rangers have made a strong start to the NHL season, winning three of their first four games, but 25-year-old defenseman Matthew Robertson has not taken the ice in any of them.

On October 5, the club decided to place Robertson on waivers. Hockey reporter Vince Mercogliano suggested the move is tied to the team's need to create a roster spot for a center currently playing in the American Hockey League.

Another possible factor is the situation at center, where forward Joe Veleno suffered a lower-body injury in the team's previous game, leaving the Rangers short-handed at that position.

Last season, Robertson appeared in 72 games for the Rangers, recording six goals and 12 assists while posting a minus-1 rating.

The same day, Calgary made similar moves of its own, placing forward Connor Zary and defenseman Brayden Pachal on waivers.

Goaltender Smits remains on the Rangers' roster and, according to the team's published lineup, is currently serving as the backup behind Schneider. Robertson was not listed in that lineup.

The Rangers' next game is scheduled for the night of October 7 against their crosstown rivals, the New York Islanders.
