Russell Holds Off Verstappen and Antonelli to Win Austrian F1 Grand Prix
George Russell won the Austrian F1 Grand Prix, holding off Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli. The race featured intense battles and strategic errors, while Antonelli remains the championship leader.

Mercedes driver George Russell secured victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on the Red Bull Ring, finishing 1.6 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Kimi Antonelli, also driving for Mercedes, completed the podium in third place after closing in on Verstappen in the final laps.
The race featured early battles between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, with Hamilton overtaking the Monegasque driver on the first lap. Red Bull opted for an aggressive strategy, while Ferrari’s approach with earlier pit stops proved costly, leaving both Hamilton and Leclerc in worse positions. A virtual safety car (VSC) was triggered on lap 24 when Carlos Sainz’s Williams stopped, disadvantaging Antonelli and Hamilton. Another VSC on lap 53, caused by Alex Albon hitting a track barrier, again hindered Antonelli.
In the closing stages, Verstappen attempted to catch Russell, but the Mercedes driver managed the pace well. A late pit stop for Verstappen complicated his pursuit. Antonelli pressured Verstappen on the final lap but could not overtake. Despite forecasts, rain did not arrive.
After eight rounds, Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship with 171 points, becoming the youngest F1 championship leader at age 19. Russell is second with 131 points, followed by Hamilton with 125. Oscar Piastri has 80 points, while Lando Norris and Leclerc both have 79, and Verstappen has 73. In the constructors’ standings, Mercedes leads with 302 points, ahead of Ferrari (204), McLaren (159), and Red Bull (115).
The season originally had 24 races, but the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were cancelled due to conflict in the Middle East. The season will conclude in Abu Dhabi in early December.
