Rasima: KNAB has not yet approached me with questions
Saeima deputy Rasima says the anti-corruption bureau KNAB has not yet contacted her in its review of her housing compensation, adding that she understands why the check was launched.
Latvian Saeima deputy Rasima has stated that the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has not yet asked her any questions in connection with an ongoing review of her rental compensation. She said the check is understandable given the information that has appeared publicly.
The deputy explained that she uses the compensation because she lives in Latgale and commutes every week from her home in Rēzekne district to the Saeima. On days when she is working at the parliament, she stays in a rented apartment for which she receives compensation.
KNAB launched the review on its own initiative after public reports about possible dishonest conduct by Rasima in receiving housing rent compensation. The bureau is currently assessing whether the request and payment of the compensation were justified.
Earlier discussions arose after it became known that Rasima receives 610 euros per month in rent compensation, although her asset declaration shows an apartment in Riga belonging to her. The deputy previously said on social media that the apartment was bought in her name by her mother, that she has never lived there and receives no income from it.
KNAB has also repeatedly drawn the Saeima's attention to shortcomings in the rules governing deputies' transport and housing cost compensation, saying these may create opportunities for abuse. In the bureau's view, stricter control of payments and additional requirements for submitted documents could reduce the risks.
