Latvian musician Raum, whose real name is Reinis Straume, has released a new single called “Purvs” (“Swamp”). It is the second track from his upcoming second studio album. Audiences will be able to hear it live as well, at a free pop-up concert at the bar “Burbulis” on the evening of 30 October.

A heavier message

Stylistically, “Purvs” follows the bouncy pop-rock and/or college rock of Raum’s earlier songs, but its message is more serious and weighty. The musician says the idea came after he learned that an acquaintance had taken his own life – not a family member or close friend, but someone whose life unfolded on the periphery and who seemingly had been given a great deal. This reminded Raum of several similar cases in the past and made him think about how slowly the sinking happens in such a state, how nobody may find out until it is too late, and whether anything can help a person in that situation.

The lyrics depict a moment of clarity when a person realises that he needs help to get out. Raum hopes the song will help someone feel heard and recognise their own emotional state or that of someone close to them.

The second album

Together with the previously released single “Garas naktis, garas dienas” (“Long Nights, Long Days”), the new song sketches the outline of Raum’s second album. His support team says the album will be emotional and darker, both in lyrics and musically, than the debut album “dns”. The recording process was also more personal than before, as Raum himself is the producer or co-producer of all the songs.

Reinis Straume began his solo career five years ago, releasing his first singles under the umbrella of the international record label Warner Music. The debut album “dns” came out in August 2025.
