Harvest season brings uninvited guests into homes – fruit flies

Harvest time has arrived, meaning homes are increasingly filled with homegrown garden produce – fruits, berries and vegetables piling up on kitchen shelves and tables. This is the time of year when many people enjoy the abundant, fresh harvest gathered during this particular period.

However, along with these tasty and healthy products, homes often also become home to uninvited guests. These are fruit flies, also known as drosophila. These tiny insects tend to appear precisely when homes contain large amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables, creating extra inconvenience for those actively involved in harvesting and storing produce at this time.

The appearance of fruit flies in homes is a common occurrence specifically during the autumn season, when many Latvian households store fresh garden produce. This seasonal issue affects a wide segment of residents who grow or purchase fresh produce during harvest time.

While fruit flies themselves do not pose a serious threat, their presence in the home can be annoying and disruptive to daily life. They tend to appear unexpectedly and multiply quickly when their preferred conditions are available – namely, ripened or spoiling fruits and vegetables.

Harvest season recurs every year, and with it, this small but widely familiar problem returns as well. It remains one of the seasonal challenges faced by households that store large quantities of fresh garden produce.
