Harvest Season on Roads: Police Urge Caution and Mutual Respect
As the harvest season intensifies in Latvia, agricultural machinery and trucks have significantly increased on roads. The State Police calls on drivers to be extra cautious when overtaking large vehicles and to expect possible delays at grain reception points.
Increased Machinery on Roads
With the active harvesting of grains and other crops, the presence of agricultural machinery, trucks, and tractors on Latvian roads has grown substantially. The State Police notes that farmers are working under tight schedules, using every favorable weather window, so machinery can be encountered from early morning until late evening.
Drivers are urged to exercise special caution when overtaking large equipment and to assess the safety of maneuvers beforehand. They should also anticipate possible traffic restrictions and queues at grain reception and storage sites.
Safety Requirements for Machinery Operators
Police remind machinery operators to ensure their vehicles are in proper technical condition, paying particular attention to brakes, tires, lighting, and steering. Loads must be secured according to regulations to prevent spillage onto the roadway. Spilled grain or other agricultural products can create slippery surfaces, so after unloading, compartments must be cleaned to avoid debris on the road.
It is also critical to comply with the maximum permissible vehicle weight and axle load distribution. Overloaded vehicles increase risks, damage road infrastructure, and lengthen braking distances.
