The joint railway project Rail Baltica is facing a significant funding shortfall. According to RB Rail, none of the Baltic states – Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia – currently have sufficient resources to complete the first phase of the project.

All three countries are looking to the European Union’s next multiannual budget, which will be available after 2028, for additional support. The current lack of funding could cause delays in the implementation of this key regional infrastructure project.

RB Rail, the project implementer, has indicated that the current funding is insufficient to cover all costs associated with the first phase. The countries hope that the new EU budget will provide the necessary funds, but exact amounts are not yet known. Delays in the project could affect not only transport connections but also the regional economy and integration into Europe.

Rail Baltica aims to create a high-speed railway connection between the Baltic states and the rest of Europe, but without additional funds, its completion is at risk. This is a significant infrastructure project that will connect the region with the European rail network, and its completion is crucial for the economic development of the Baltic states.
