"Re:Check": Coalition politicians increasingly overstate achievements ahead of elections

The fact-checking project "Re:Check", run by the investigative journalism centre "Re:Baltica", has found that representatives of the governing coalition are increasingly exaggerating their achievements in public statements as the upcoming elections draw closer, presenting their work in a more favourable light than the actual situation supports.

What is "Re:Check"

"Re:Check" is an initiative of "Re:Baltica" dedicated to verifying public statements made by politicians, officials and other influential public figures by comparing them against available facts and data. The project regularly monitors political rhetoric, particularly during periods of heightened political activity and public visibility.

Trend ahead of elections

According to the project's analysis, as elections approach, there is a growing tendency among coalition politicians to emphasize and overstate their accomplishments in order to strengthen their image among voters. "Re:Check" notes that this phenomenon is becoming more frequent as political competition intensifies before a vote.

The project stresses the importance of fact-checking so that the public can assess the accuracy of politicians' statements and make informed decisions during elections. Accurate and verified information about the work carried out by the government and coalition parties is one of the prerequisites for a transparent political process.
