Reform UK makes dramatic first impression in Senedd opposition role

Weeks after the May elections, Reform UK as the official opposition in the Welsh Parliament has already caused walkouts, controversial statements, and internal voting confusion, raising questions about its conduct.

A Heated Start

Reform UK, which came second in May's historic Welsh elections behind Plaid Cymru, now holds over a third of seats in the expanded Senedd – its largest political platform yet. Some of its new Members of the Senedd (MSs) have quickly made their mark with provocative behavior.

Controversial Remarks and Walkout

Reform MS Joe Martins drew gasps during First Minister's Questions by distinguishing between Ukrainian and Sudanese refugees, alleging only the latter commit violent crimes. Labour MS Shav Taj struggled to hold back tears while responding, sharing her parents' immigration story. The following day, Martins continued, claiming Welsh students cannot read and that Indian nurses take Welsh jobs, prompting a walkout by upset Plaid Cymru, Labour, and Green MSs.

The Senedd's presiding officer rebuked Martins, who has since remained quiet in plenary. However, Reform's chief whip Llŷr Powell told the BBC that others should "get used to it," calling it the "new norm."

Own-Goal Votes and Confusion

Last week, a third of Reform MSs voted against their own party in a debate on Plaid Cymru's childcare plans, including an amendment noting Reform UK had no childcare commitments in its Welsh manifesto. Political journalist Will Hayward suggested the 11 may have misunderstood the motion or accidentally voted wrongly.

Future Challenges

Laura McAllister, professor at Cardiff University, noted that while Dan Thomas leads Reform in the Senedd, Nigel Farage is the ultimate decision-maker. She warned that chaos or bad behavior does not sell well even to Reform's base, and discipline is needed for credibility.

Reform will chair five of 13 Senedd committees, including climate change, which a source expects to be "ugly" given the party's opposition to net zero. A Reform motion for a new lobbying register passed with cross-party support, but a debate next week on Wales' sanctuary programme for Ukrainian refugees is expected to bring more inflammatory rhetoric.
