Two wards renovated and historic reliefs restored at “Tērvete” rehabilitation centre
The “Tērvete” rehabilitation centre has completed restoration of two historic facade reliefs and renovation of two higher-comfort wards. The work was funded by the State Culture Capital Foundation and carried out by several construction firms.
The Dobele municipal council reports that several renovation projects have been completed at the “Tērvete” rehabilitation centre, covering both the restoration of historic art on the building's facade and interior repairs.
Historic reliefs restored
On the building's southern facade, on the staircase towers, are two sculptural reliefs by sculptor Kārlis Zemdega titled “Healing” and “Destruction of Evil,” created in 1931 and 1932. Both works are included in the national list of state-significant art monuments and are placed symmetrically on the blind staircase towers, complementing the functionalist-style building designed by architect Aleksandrs Klinklāvs.
The reliefs' shared theme depicts a person's struggle against illness and death, reflecting the building's original purpose as a Red Cross tuberculosis sanatorium.
The restoration work was carried out by SIA “ĢB veidojumi” and was supported by 3,000 euros in funding from the State Culture Capital Foundation, administered jointly with the National Heritage Board.
Two wards renovated
This summer, SIA “AKP būve” completed a simplified renovation of two higher-comfort wards, No. 308 and No. 309, based on a project description prepared by SIA “Nams.” The total contract cost was 45,249.42 euros excluding VAT.
During the renovation, both wards were reconfigured, each fitted with a bathroom accessible directly from the ward. Interior finishes and flooring were replaced, suspended modular ceilings installed, and wall finishing and tiling completed in the bathrooms. The ventilation system was also renewed, along with new water supply and sewage connections, new lighting, and electrical connections.
Earlier this spring, under a separate contract, SIA “AKP būve” had already renovated ward No. 217 at the rehabilitation centre, at a cost of 19,050.44 euros excluding VAT.
