17-year-old detained in Rēzekne over robbery of man in city park

Police in Rēzekne have detained a minor on suspicion of robbing a man in a city park, after the victim was assaulted and had property stolen from him.

The incident took place on the evening of September 14 in a park in Rēzekne, where an unidentified person used physical force against a man born in 1977, causing him bodily injuries.

During the attack, the victim's mobile phone and a shopping bag containing goods were stolen. Total damages are estimated at around 300 euros.

Suspect identified within a day

Officers from the Northern Latgale unit of the State Police's Latgale regional department responded to the report immediately. Investigative measures led to the identification of a suspect the very next day, September 15 — a young man born in 2009.

The detained individual has been remanded in custody. Police noted that he had previously come to the attention of law enforcement both for a similar offense and for other violations.

Investigation ongoing

A criminal case has been opened under Section 176, Part One of the Criminal Law, which covers robbery — the theft of another person's movable property involving violence or the threat of violence. The offense carries a penalty of up to five years' imprisonment, or short-term imprisonment, probation supervision, community service, or a fine, with the possible confiscation of property.

Police emphasized that a person is not considered guilty until proven so through the legally established procedure. The investigation continues.
