Fire destroys farmstead in Rēzekne region, calf and piglet killed

A large fire broke out early this morning at a farmstead in Viļāni parish, Rēzekne region, according to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).

The call came in at 4:06 am, reporting open flames engulfing a single-storey wooden residential house of about 100 square metres along with an attached barn of roughly 160 square metres. Given the scale of the blaze, it was classified as a high-danger fire.

During the firefighting operation, rescuers managed to save one piglet from the danger zone, but another piglet and a calf did not survive. The fire was brought under control by 6:39 am, though firefighters continued working at the scene afterward to extinguish remaining hotspots.

Separate incident in Riga

On the same day, VUGD also responded to another incident in Riga. On Saturday at 5:07 pm, the service received a call to an address on Latgales iela, where food left unattended on a switched-on stove in an apartment of a twelve-storey residential building had burned, causing minor damage of just 0.01 square metres. Before firefighters arrived, 30 residents had already evacuated the building on their own. Work at that scene concluded at 5:36 pm.

Over the past 24 hours, VUGD received a total of 47 calls — 16 for firefighting, 20 for rescue operations, and 11 that turned out to be false alarms.
