Radiology tops residency demand; addiction psychiatry and geriatrics receive no applicants
This year, radiology is the most competitive specialty in residency programs, while addiction psychiatry and geriatrics have no applicants at all.

Residency enrollment for new doctors is underway at both Latvian higher education institutions – Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the University of Latvia (LU). After application submission, trends are emerging regarding the most and least popular specialties.
The highest competition this year is in radiology, where there are seven to eight applicants per state-funded spot, reflecting the specialty's strong appeal among future doctors.
At the same time, several state-funded positions remain unfilled. Notably, no applicants have signed up for addiction psychiatry or geriatrics. Several dozen vacancies overall are yet to be filled, but the process is still ongoing, and the final outcome is not yet determined.
