Residency admissions: radiology popular; addiction psychiatrist and geriatrician get no applicants
In this year's residency admissions in Latvia, radiology is the most sought-after specialty, while addiction psychiatrist and geriatrician positions have no applicants. Several dozen state-funded spots remain unfilled, but the process is not yet final.
The admission of new doctors into residency studies is underway at both Latvian universities – Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the University of Latvia (LU). Applications have been submitted, and trends are emerging regarding which specialties are most and least popular.
Radiology is in high demand, with seven or eight candidates competing for each available spot. In contrast, the specialties of addiction psychiatrist and geriatrician have received no applicants. Currently, there are several dozen unfilled state-funded positions, but the admission process is not yet complete, so the situation could change.
