RFS grinds past stubborn Super Nova to reach Latvian Cup semi-final
RFS beat Super Nova 1:0 in the Latvian Cup quarter-final, joining Riga and Daugavpils in the semi-final lineup.
RFS secured a narrow 1:0 win over Super Nova at Jānis Skredelis Stadium in a Latvian Cup quarter-final match, earning a place in the tournament's semi-final round.
The home side started brightly, creating early chances against RFS. Super Nova's captain fired a shot wide from inside the box after a corner, and Valērijs Lizunovs also had a good opportunity soon after, but goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics kept his goal intact through the opening spell.
RFS broke the deadlock in the 20th minute. Niks Dusalijevs delivered a precise pass into the box for recently signed Croatian forward Duje Korač, who did not hesitate and finished into the corner past Super Nova goalkeeper Dāvis Viljams Veisbuks.
Later in the first half, Eduards Emsis tested Matrevics on a counterattack, but the RFS goalkeeper again came out on top. Despite trailing, Super Nova remained competitive throughout the first 45 minutes.
RFS controlled proceedings after the break, though clear scoring chances were slow to materialize. In the 73rd minute, RFS's own goal came under threat when a risky attempted cross by Matrevics was blocked by an opponent and nearly looped into his own net.
Super Nova were unable to find an equalizer in the remaining time, and RFS's 1:0 victory sent them through to the Latvian Cup semi-final, joining Riga and Daugavpils, who had already qualified. The match was officiated by Aleksandrs Anufrijevs.
