West Indies beat Pakistan and dedicate win to Sobers

West Indies secured a 90-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Tarouba, Trinidad, on day four. The win was dedicated to the late Sir Garfield Sobers, who would have turned 90 on the day of the victory.

Chasing 211 for victory, Pakistan collapsed to 71-9 in their second innings on a deteriorating pitch. However, a resilient 49-run last-wicket partnership between captain Babar Azam and Muhammad Abbas took the match into the evening session. Babar remained unbeaten on 58, but Jayden Seales eventually trapped Abbas lbw for 23 to seal the win.

West Indies skipper Roston Chase said the team wanted to make Sobers proud and hoped he was smiling down on them. He also thanked the Trinidad crowd for their support.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood admitted his side were not up to the mark as a batting unit on the final day, despite playing good cricket earlier. He noted the uneven bounce but stressed the need to build partnerships.

The second Test of the two-match series starts on 2 August in Port of Spain.
