A number of Western diplomats currently based in Kyiv have begun informally discussing contingency plans in case the situation in Ukraine's capital were to deteriorate sharply. The concern stems from Russia's ongoing and potentially intensifying strikes on civilian infrastructure.

Possible options

One scenario under discussion involves relocating embassy operations to Lviv, a city in western Ukraine that lies farther from the front line and has so far been less affected by attacks. Another option mentioned is moving diplomatic missions to eastern Poland, outside Ukrainian territory altogether.

Context

The information was disclosed by two senior diplomats who spoke to the British newspaper The Guardian. According to them, such a plan would be seriously considered only if Russia were to shift toward deliberately targeting foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv, rather than civilian infrastructure in general.

For now, these remain informal and preliminary discussions among diplomats rather than an officially adopted decision or announced evacuation plan. The sources did not specify which countries' representatives are involved in the talks, nor did they indicate a timeline for any potential relocation.
